FUELAL (André Raymond) - PATT. Nine in the kingdom under the sea. S.l. Éditions E.L.S., Christmas 1941. - In-4, paperback, cut-out composition pasted to front cover. Extremely rare first edition. On verso of title is this printed note: "This tale was composed, illustrated and published at OFLAG II D, Westphalenhof Camp in Pomerania by French Prisoner-of-War Officers for their children and those of their comrades." "Oflag" is the German abbreviation for Offizierslager, or "officer's camp" in French. During the Second World War, this term designated the prisoner-of-war camps reserved for officers in Germany. Each Oflag was identified by a Roman numeral indicating the region in which it was located, and a letter to distinguish it from other camps in the same area. Oflag II D, as shown here, was located near Westfalenhof, in Prussian Pomerania. Opened in 1939, it occupied the military grounds of the Wehrmacht training range at Groß Born and was administratively dependent on Wehrkreis II (the 2ᵉ German military region). The edition features numerous black and bistre illustrations in the text by a certain PATT. The justification indicates an edition of 175 copies sold outside the bookshop, for the benefit of "Secours National". This is supposed to be one of the 45 hand-illustrated deluxe copies (no. XXXIV). In fact, it includes numerous unsigned original color drawings or enhanced figures, including a frontispiece, a title vignette, 6 full-page compositions and 15 in the text. The print run of 175 copies seems fanciful, since on the one hand the numbering of the copies as indicated in the justification is erroneous, and on the other hand the copies in circulation are extremely rare. No copies are known to exist in French or European public libraries. Only one copy can be found in the United States, at Princeton University. Adhesive tape covering the back cover. The composition on the front cover is rubbed.
