Dark green half-maroquin with corners, gilt fillets, ornate ribbed spine, gilt head, untrimmed (A. Bianchi, Nice, 1928). Set of 8 of the 25 volumes of this collection on classical painters. These are all those devoted to the painter Raphael. The work was published by Charles-Paul Landon (1760-1826), painter in the Duc de Berry's cabinet and curator of paintings at the Musée du Louvre. His ambition was to present the entire oeuvre of the greatest painters, or at least to bring together the most perfect works that painting has produced. In addition to Raphael, he devoted volumes to Eustache Le Sueur, Dominiquin, Michelangelo, Nicolas Poussin, Francesco Albani, Bandinelli, Daniel de Volterre, Jouvenet, Corrège, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Le Guide and Veronese. At the time, it was possible to purchase each of these masters separately, which is why complete sets are only rarely found. The section devoted to Raphael is the most extensive, spread over 8 volumes. It includes a life of the artist, preceded by an engraved portrait, but above all 342 plates reproducing the master's paintings, line-engraved by multiple artists including Pauline Landon (1786-1871), Charles-Paul's daughter. ONE OF 250 COPIES WITH ENGRAVINGS BEFORE THE LETTER. Each volume bears an autograph justification signed by Landon opposite the title. This copy is number 58. Spines faded. Plate 58 of the first volume is duplicated. A few tiny traces of light wetness, not serious.
