Lot no. 246

Leonard Tsuguharu FOUJITA (1886 - 1968) Cupid, 1924 India ink and ink wash on paper. Signed lower left "Tsuguharu" (kanji) and "Foujita". 18 x 11 cm A certificate from Sylvie Buisson and Casimir Buisson will be given to the buyer. This drawing is part of a series of studies devoted to the Cupid motif that Foujita produced in 1924, while working on the sets and costumes for the ballet Le Tournoi singulier, created by Rolf de Maré's Swedish Ballets, with music by Roland-Manuel. On this occasion, the artist repeatedly developed this theme in his drawings. He illustrated the cover of the ballet's program, Partition pour piano seul, published in Paris by Heugel in 1924, with a Cupid. This drawing bears witness to the close link between Foujita's graphic work and his stage activity in the artistic Paris of the 1920s.
