Our drawing can be compared to the figure of Saint Anne on the right of the composition in the painting The Education of the Virgin, preserved in Bruges, in the church of Saint Anne (see : Exhibition catalog, Trois maîtres flamands, Garemyn, Pulinx, Pepers, Stadshallen Brugge, Desclée de Brouwer, 1955, pl.V, p.33).

As a young man, Jan Garemijn was a pupil of the sculptor Rochus Aerts, Hendrik Pulinx and Lodewijk Roose, both painters. In 1765, he became professor and director of the Bruges Academy, a position he held for ten years. A prolific artist, he is admired above all for his drawing skills. His style was strongly influenced by the great French artists Boucher, Fragonard and Greuze, as well as his compatriots Jordaens and Rubens.
