Jean JOUBERT (? 1643 - Bourbon l'Archambault 1707)
The Easter Lamb
Gouache and gold highlights on vellum stretched over an oval panel.
Titled in gold at the foot.
(Damage and tears).
24.5 x 32 cm
In an antique frame.

Provenance :
Collection of Monsieur and Madame C. (before 1930). By descent.

Jean Joubert produced a series of one hundred and thirty-six gouaches on the Old and New Testaments for Versailles. It is likely that the commission was made to decorate a cabinet for the infanta-queen, Marie Anne Victoire d'Espagne, fiancée of Louis XV, who resided at Versailles from 1721 to 1725. The gouaches were removed from the cabinet in 1730, but evidence of the touch-and-touch hanging is preserved in elevations by Robert de Cotte. Oval or rectangular in shape, the gouaches are all titled in gold lettering, as on ours. Today, the Louvre holds around seventy of them.
