in the upper part
103.5 x 71 cm
Old restorations

Provenance :
Sartiges Collection, Château du Perthuis.

The Master of the Prodigal Son is named after a painting in Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum, The Parable of the Prodigal Son. He is in the tradition of the Antwerp Mannerist painters who were contemporaries of Pieter Coecke van Aelst.
There are several variant versions of our composition, with its rectangular format and scalloped upper section, including one presented for sale in Amsterdam by Christie's in November 1999 (no. 111).
Our painting is distinguished from all these versions by the wings of the young John the Baptist and the cross on his forehead, representing him as an angel. An infrared photograph shows the creation process, the underlying design of the trimmings, the Virgin's halo, the spoon and the knife. The spoon and knife have been moved.
