Pierre-Joseph PROUDHON (1809-1865). L.A.S., Ixelles August 22, 1859, to Auguste Rolland; 1 page and a quarter in-8. A Belgian newspaper had published an article saying that Proudhon had been condemned for contempt of morals, and he is concerned about Rolland's possible interpretation: "I think you have misunderstood the meaning and intention of the little article in l'Indépendance; the author wanted to allude to the bad faith of my judges, by no means to my immorality. That's why he underlined the words outrage aux mœurs. Reread the article, carelessly written like everything else journalists do, and you'll see that there's nothing more to it. The Director, Mr. Bérardi, knows me, and welcomed me too well; Mr. Considérant, who read the proofs of my memoir, with whom I met more than once, showed me too much sympathy for me to be mistaken"... Attached is a handwritten note by Rolland relating to this letter and to an anecdote that occurred to Proudhon, who had placed his hat on the ground and received alms there.
