Georges PEREC (1936-1982). 2 L.A.S., Paris "18 rue de l'Assomption" April 16 and 22 [1956, to Michel de M'Uzan]; 3pages and a half and 2pages in-4.
Important letters before beginning psychoanalysis with Michel de M'Uzan (1921-2018).
April 16. On the advice of his former philosophy teacher Jean Duvignaud, Perec contacts Michel de M'Uzan. After recalling the milestones in his life (his father killed in 1940, his mother deported, his life with his uncle and aunt, his running away at the age of 12, his analysis with Françoise Dolto), he recounts his beginnings as a writer, his failures in love, and now his inability to work for his exams: "I have no desire other than to miraculously find the one who will bring me the love and tenderness I've been waiting for for two and a half years, no strength other than to be dragged along by my friends. I live on cigarettes and black coffee [...] I sleep badly. I have no self-confidence. I'm tired. I took political events to heart in the second quarter because it was important to take sides. I can't do it anymore". He needs strength and confidence to pass his exams and to "acquire the casualness necessary to encourage my search for tenderness"...
April 23. After talking to his uncle, he thought "long and hard about whether an undertaking as lengthy as an analysis was commensurate with the seriousness of my troubles. I was the only judge. In the end, I decided it was worth it. I therefore accept, at the pace and under the conditions you have set for me"... However, he would like to know if he can "continue to write during the treatment"...
Attached is a L.A.S. from Michel de M'Uzan to Perec, October 4, 1957 (1p. in-8), questioning his decision to stop the analysis, "perfectly conceivable in view of the importance of the work accomplished"...
