Paul LÉAUTAUD (1872-1956). L.A.S., Paris July 27, 1904, to Paul Valéry; 1page in-12. Curious bill to cancel an appointment. [The Journal littéraire reveals that a bout of gonorrhea had immobilized Léautaud from July 17 to 24, 1904, then that knee pain and ophthalmia had forced him into bed again from July 27 to August 19]. He wrote to his "dear Valéry": "There's no way yet. My right leg has been taken, to the point where I can neither stand nor walk. I even wonder how I'll manage tomorrow [...] and what's more, I'm worried. 32 years old, and so far gone!"... Attached is another letter from Léautaud to Paul Valéry, dictated (probably to his friend Blanche Blanc) and signed with a few autograph additions, about an infusion of herbs to treat ophthalmia; plus a bill a.s. (March 17, 1951) about the Petit Ami covers.
