Max JACOB. Autograph poem with drawing, Vieux monde brisé, [1938]; 1page in-4. Working manuscript with erasures and corrections, and partly crossed out, of this poem collected in L'Homme de cristal (1967, p.23). It comprises 7 quatrains, two of which (5 and 6) are crossed out. The first 3 stanzas appeared in the review Pain blanc in December 1936, with a dedication to Georges Caillé; the 7 stanzas were published in the review Aguedal in 1939; L'Homme de cristal did not retain the two crossed-out stanzas. Vieux monde brisé replaces the original strikethrough title: Les deux fées. "Under the capes of the past, a shoreless ocean I contemplate a love carried away by the winds"... The poem is headed by a pen-and-ink drawing of a young woman's head.
