Max JACOB. Autograph poem signed, À la mémoire de Guillaume Apollinaire, [1919]; 1 1/2 pages in-fol.
Important poem in tribute to Apollinaire, published in January 1919 in the triple issue, "composé à la mémoire de Guillaume Apollinaire", of Pierre Albert-Birot's SIC magazine (no. 37-38-39). It was collected in L'Homme de cristal (1967, p. 119).
The poem is in two parts of 22 and 25 lines:
"Of the two children
falling on the sea
from the gulf to the rocks by the annealed sun
 to white palaces teeming
with ivy
one is Guillaume and the other
Cupid"...
The manuscript, carefully cleaned up in black ink, was used for printing; the 2nd sheet had been glued to the end of the first by a small strip of gummed paper. An annotation for the typographers has been added at the head in red ink. On the back, the signature of Pierre Albert-Birot, who affixed his PAB stamp to the 2 leaves.
