Max JACOB. L.A.S., [late 1918], to Pierre Albert-Birot; 2pages in-fol. Project for a tribute to Apollinaire in Sic magazine. After a long list of over thirty names (Reverdy, Cocteau, Cendrars, etc.) of Apollinaire's friends (some were later crossed out in pencil by PAB), Jacob would find it "rather piquant to ask something of Romains, even Duhamel, who fought him so hard. [...] I don't think we should make this issue the banner of a 'North-South' school, an affirmative summary, since Guillaume's life is longer than an issue of our magazine". He suggests names: Mardrus, Bourges, Vollard, Mireille Havet... "Picabia, who was his close friend, wrote poems that might have pleased him, and Fauconnet, the painter, is a litterateur"... He rarely sees Reverdy, and insists on Jean Royère: "Apollinaire and he had a very intimate literary relationship for a very long time". He will try to write a poem, "although time is desperately short". Picasso must be seen, as must André Salmon: "it would be unfair, cruel and unseemly to keep Salmon away from such an event"...
