Charles VILDRAC (1882-1971). 5 L.A.S., 1932-1934; 7pages in-4.
To Émile Fabre, administrator of the Comédie-Française. - December 5, 1932, complaining that his play La Brouille (premiered December 1, 1930) is not performed more often, "despite its undeniable success", while plays staged the same season have a better fate, such as Le Maître de son cœur (by Paul Raynal), La Rafale (by Bernstein) or Le Sang de Danton (by Saint-Georges Bouhélier). The same goes for his play Le Pèlerin (first performed in 1922). He knows that Berthe Bovy had to give up her role in Le Pèlerin for her successes in La Voix humaine (by Cocteau) and Vieille Maman (by Barrie). He felt that the sociétaire Marie Bell, who had already played the role of Denise and was admirable in it, could very well replace Bovy for good. La Brouille and Le Pèlerin are neither expensive nor difficult to stage. He therefore counts on Fabre to program them more often. - December 24, 1934. He learned that Béatrice Bretty, who had created the role of Jeanne Dumas in La Brouille, wanted to give up her role, because she had not been programmed for a revival of her play, and had been replaced by Andrée de Chauveron. He had high regard for Mme de Chauveron's talent, but it was Bretty who had the age, nature and physique of the character, and above all the radiance that was so important in the second act. He therefore asked Fabre to intervene so that Bretty would reconsider her decision, as he was very fond of this interpreter.
To his friend, the actor Hubert Prélier. - May 28, 1933, inviting him to replace André Bacqué at the ceremony for the friends of the poet Léon Deubel (1879-1913) and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque on his birthplace in Belfort. Prélier will read two or three poems by Deubel. It would be an opportunity to spend two days together. He dined with filmmaker Julien Duvivier, who would like to adapt Vildrac's Le Paquebot Tenacity into a film. Vildrac sees no other actor than Prélier in the character of Segard... - February 28, 1934. He came to Saint-Tropez for a rest, and started working on the film with Maurice Chevalier, but the latter chickened out. "Still, Duvivier finds this letting go rather flippant. [...] I've got two other scripts that we think are very good but we're not doing anything with, other ideas that I don't even have the courage to put down on paper, convinced that they're useless, and a play that I'm going to end up publishing because I can't get it performed". He has seen the first cut of the film of Paquebot Tenacity: "It's very good, apart from two or three little things that bother me", which he details. Marie Glory and Prélier are admirable, "Préjean is less and less good as the film goes on. He never seems smitten. By the end, he just doesn't exist!"... - Saturday, on a reunion of "actor friends"...
