An autograph note from Montherlant on his telephone conversations with Vilar is enclosed: "Around March 29 60 telephones me that he would like to play the role and that nothing prevents him from playing it elsewhere than at the T.N.P. On the morning of April 1 60 telephones me that he cannot play it elsewhere and that no + at the T.N.P. At 1:1/2 telephones me that he can play it at the end of October at the T.N.P. with Casarès. Plea in favor of his theater, where Meurtre [dans la cathédrale] and Marivaux have been successfully performed. [In the end, Le Cardinal d'Espagne premiered at the Comédie-Française on December 18, 1960].
