Jean VILAR (1912-1971). L.A.S., [1943], to actor Bernard Lajarrige; 1 page and a half in-8 on compagnie des sept letterhead (small lack at one corner without harming the text). He has read "the play by the Quintero brothers. For my part, I find the three acts perfect in the 'entertainment' genre [...] in the best sense of the word", as in Molière's L'Amour peintre or Shakespeare's Peines d'amour perdues, and has the advantage of being "closer, in my opinion, to contemporary audiences. So there's a lot to recommend it to a theatre director. But as I don't have a theater, it's impossible for me to say whether I'll put it on or play it. And besides, for its very spirit and charm and delightful qualities, it's not in the current line of my work". His advice was to pass the play on to Barsacq (director of the Théâtre de l'Atelier), Jean Dasté, or the Compagnie de la Roulotte. "And it seems to me, even better than all that, that it's you who should direct this play and play P. Juan." [Vilar wrote this letter on the letterhead of "la Compagnie des Sept", which he founded in August 1943]. Enclosed is a L.A.S. from Bernard Lajarrige to Jean Vilar, April 13, 1952; and the rare program for the Compagnie des Sept at the Théâtre du Vieux Colombier [September-October 1943] for Jean Schlumberger's Césaire and Strindberg's Orage.
