Maurice POTTECHER (1867-1960). L.A.S., Bussang August 13, 1899, [to Octave Uzanne]; 3 1/2 pages in-12 on Théâtre du Peuple letterhead and vignette. On the Théâtre du Peuple in Bussang. He awaits his correspondent's visit and thanks him "for bothering you from so far away out of interest in a provincial work. I hope you will not be too disappointed to have followed your curiosity. I have not forgotten that in the past, when I published my first book, La Peine de l'esprit, you already showed me this same benevolent interest with particular sympathy, and the memory of your name, mingled with the high esteem I have for your talent, remains attached to my beginnings as a writer. I regret a little that you were unable to attend last night's performance of Chacun cherche son trésor. It seems to me that this half-realistic, half-fantastical tale, which is so sensitive for an artist, and which seems to have made such a strong impression on the public, was best performed on a beautiful summer's night; and no doubt the broad daylight, for which this play is hardly made, will only accentuate the farce at the expense of the poetry. At least you will see the theater, the actors and the audience, of which we have so far spoken, even benevolently, more than we have bothered to see them up close"; he will give him his brochure on the Théâtre du Peuple... Attached is an autograph manuscript signed by Octave Uzanne, Visions de notre heure, choses et gens qui passent.15 août [1900] (4pages oblong in-4 cut out for printing and reassembled). Highly complimentary and enthusiastic article on Maurice Pottecher's Théâtre du Peuple de Bussang.
