André OBEY (1892-1975). L.A.S., April 21, 1946, to Bernard Blier; 1 1/2 pages in-4. Beautiful letter, on the very day of the last of the 30 performances of his play Maria. He writes to Blier of his dismay and sadness. The play didn't work, having received bad reviews, whereas many theater people found it very good, and very well acted, such as Copeau, Pierre Blanchar, Maurice Escande, Simone, Steve Passeur, Madeleine Renaud... Obey thanks the whole troupe, but doesn't have the strength to attend the last one: "my shadow will leave the theater with the last of you. Then she'll go off on her own, along a nocturnal Seine, murmuring with pain, with pride, yes, saying softly to the defunct play what our bearded friend says to the dying Maria: - Walk, my daughter! Walk, all alone, in this world of brutes and idiots. No one in this world will stop you from taking on, all alone, the weight and beauty of marble..."...
