Henry de MONTHERLANT. Autograph manuscript, Malatesta, [early 1970]; 1 1/2 pages in-4 (on the back of scrap paper). Concerning the revival of Malatesta at the Comédie-Française (January 28, 1970). "Malatesta, which is the + accessible to the public of my plays, is made + brilliant and + attractive, by the presentation of the Cdie Frse which as they say, has done things right". He reviews the principal actors: Georges Aminel [Malatesta], "a force of nature, a theatrical beast, giving of himself extraordinarily in gentleness and strength"...; Claude Winter [Isotta], "an extraordinarily just instrument, [...] she is perfection. It is always the height of art, in the height of naturalness"; Louis Seigner [the Pope], "at times undoubtedly unctuous, but at others of resounding energy: we have seen a pope all honey, and we have a terrible pope. [...] an admirable lesson in the art of acting!"; Bernard Dhéran [Porciello] "fills the auditorium with alternating fear and amusement in a character at once comic in his cowardice, and sinister in his actions"... And he goes on to quote François Chaumette, Michel Etcheverry, Jean-Paul Moulinot... "None of this would be what it is without its director, Pierre Dux. Pierre Dux is the very intelligence of theater, and intelligence itself. This is the fourth play of mine that he's directed [...] Dux combines respect for the play he's directing with a very subtle art of seeing what will serve it with the audience; with him a play can lose a few happy lines: he makes sure it never loses its purpose. I think his realization of Malatesta will win everyone's admiration."
