Aurélien LUGNÉ-POE. Autograph manuscript signed, Billet au camarade qui redoute le sort du théâtre, [1934]; 4pages in-8 filled with small, tight handwriting.
On the ever-critical situation of the theater. He believes that the theater's situation has improved. He recalls his early days at a theater "where Réjane & Lucien Guitry were the stars", but which went bankrupt. He promised himself no more engagements. He recalls the crisis of 1892-1893, when several theaters went under, and quotes an article by Jean Jullien in 1905... "1934 would definitely be no better than 1905 - or even 1892! Yet measures were taken: "The old Société des auteurs has drowned under regulations, which its members worry about like fish worry about apples. Associations of directors have been founded. [...] Actors, unable to stay behind, have in turn formed unions and syndicates"... And Lugné-Poe exclaims: "For the glory of the theater, I demand freedom, all freedom! No brakes, no constraints!"... He concludes with a childhood memory: an open-air performance by a small traveling troupe of three actors, "Les Hirondelles": "Many times I have seen in my mind that day of happy artists & spectators!"
