Louis JOUVET. 3 L.A.S., New York and Paris 1917-1919, to Clément Rueff in New York; 3pages and a half in-4, 2 on French Theatre du Vieux Colombier letterhead and vignette, and one from Théâtre du Vieux Colombier, 2 envelopes.
Jouvet was the stage manager of Le Vieux Colombier at the time, while the troupe toured the United States, supported by the antiquarian Clément Rueff.
New York November 27, 1917 (opening day of Vieux Colombier's first season in New York), Jouvet thanks Rueff for tapestries (probably for a set), "for the compliments, for your continual and so kind helpfulness". - January 23, 1919. He sends him "from the boss [Jacques Copeau] the formidable list of furniture and accessories needed to make our good 'friend Fritz' [L'Ami Fritz, by Erckmann-Chatrian, 17th show of the second season at the Vieux-Colombier in New York, February 3, 1919] Alsatian. I don't think it's necessary to give you any details about the furniture. - You know the style better than anyone"... [Clément Rueff was Alsatian].
Paris July 8, 1919. Jouvet is back in Paris: "I'm waiting for the boss's orders - I'm waiting for the reopening - and I think with a certain melancholy - that our reopening will lack something because you won't be there"... He worries about "this sacred prohibition [...] Is it applied or not. Can we drink or not? I consider this very serious. French honor is at stake. The wine here is always good, when you can smell the terroir, and I thought of you the first day I finally drank French wine! the real thing"...
Enclosed: - a L.S. to the same, August 25, 1926 (1p. in-8 headed Comédie des Champs-Élysées, envelope), assuring him of a service for his shows at the Comédie and reduced-price tickets; - a L.A.S. "Louis Jouvet régisseur de la scène", January 9, 1920 (1p. in-4 headed Le Vieux Colombier, paper a little browned and repaired), thanking a journalist for an article "on the Electricity Workshop [...] my clients are delighted with the work done and its price".
