Eugène IONESCO. L.A.S., Paris April 9, 1960, to Mme Harry Baur, director of the Théâtre des Mathurins; 2pages in-8 (binder holes).
Ionesco wants to immediately stop performances of his play Tueurs sans gages [created at the Théâtre Récamier on February 27, 1959, directed by José Quaglio, and revived at the Mathurins in April 1960]. Jacques Lemarchand found the show "very bad", even though he had loved the play at its premiere. Similarly, other critics "no longer recognize the play". Jean-Jacques Gautier "won't defend the play; on the contrary, he'll criticize it. 2) The play's friends are no longer its friends. 3) Advertising is absent. 4) Spectators don't like it, they'll drive everyone away. 5) A bad review in Le Figaro would harm the play, Quaglio, destroy it. 6) Costs will only increase day by day. It would therefore be to our advantage to stop immediately, this evening, so that we can resume under more favorable conditions"... He adds that "the absence of the sets is catastrophic".
