Michel de GHELDERODE (1898-1962). 2 L.A.S., Brussels 1957-1960, to André Reybaz; 4 and 2 pages in-8.
[André Reybaz (1922-1949), with his "Myrmidon" troupe, was the first to reveal Ghelderode's theater to French audiences].
December 2, 1957. He has learned that Domani (director of the Théâtre de Poche) "is indeed hiding, scared and determined not to go ahead with this project to perform our two plays in January! Why is a mystery! Fear of the costs, or just fear, the fear that makes our contemporaries greenish, the color of shit? So he's been deceiving you - unless, since then, he's had a change of heart and written or telegraphed to you, which I dare to doubt! How distressing! In his defense, the Domani says he'll play Ghelderode later, in 1958, the year of the exhibition, which isn't very difficult, nor very compromising. But with whom, with Reybaz? Still a mystery! And how much confidence will you deign to have in this mortician? And how much confidence will I have in him, me, who likes to have my balls played with, but only on condition that it's done by a beautiful girl who's committed to it? There you go, poor dear Reybaz! You've suffered a lot for me, because of me: I'm appalled! How can I repair this cowardly blow? [...] it's very sad to see a man of your worth scorned in this way by an amateur, one who pretends, and who can't be beaten because he's of untouchable sex - unless he likes a hard-on in the buttocks... Horrible people, here as everywhere, invasive rot! Theater, the most exalting of arts, can only be built on latrines and cesspools? [...] As for me, I place this filth lower than the level of shit - I mean than the vertiginous depths of the shitholes where all the Domanis of Belgium and France will swallow themselves up, diluvianally, at the hour of the great flushes"...
February 25, 1960. He welcomes the good news. "May the gods help you! [...] I don't go out anymore, most of the time suffering and devoting my last years to the completion of my theater! The month of January was rather dramatic for me: never mind! I never lose heart. And it's enough for me that my friends are strong and lively in the awful battle of art, in which they sacrifice body and soul! [...] I am waiting as you are waiting, and so much the better if this victory snatched from my fate, which was very cruel for you, will one day soon allow me to play this Ghelderode whose existence you have revealed to the world. Yes, this theater is being performed everywhere these days: it's a madman's story!"...
Enclosed is a L.A.S. from André REYBAZ, September 22, 1947 (1p. in-4), about upcoming shows and projects for the company "Le Myrmidon", which he founded with Catherine Toth.
