Pierre FRESNAY. Autograph manuscript; 6pages in-4 (paginated 17 bis to 23) with erasures and corrections.
Excerpt from a radio talk in which Fresnay discusses his interpretations of Musset's plays at the Comédie-Française.
He recounts the rehearsal for his take on the role of Perdican in On ne badine pas avec l'amour, where Mme Bartet came to encourage him: she had played the role of Camille opposite Delaunay, Perdican's creator, and then with Le Bargy. In 1921, he played Valentin in Il ne faut jurer de rien, and Fortunio in Le Chandelier. "In 1922, Les Caprices de Marianne provided me with the opportunity for a second experience: that of alternately playing "Octave" and "Cœlio", in which Musset portrayed himself under the opposing aspects of his double appetite, passion and debauchery". Émile Fabre then decided to dust off the repertoire, "and in Madeleine Renaud, Mary Bell and myself (their entry had just made me the youngest member of the company) he found the youthful troupe indispensable for rejuvenation"; and he entrusted Fresnay with the task of mounting and performing Fantasio, "the most luminous souvenir of this luminous period"... Etc.
Attached is a page from Le Figaro, January 10, 1975, on Fresnay's death.
