Constant COQUELIN aîné. L.A.S., Christiania [Oslo] October 4, 1903, to René Binet; 4pages in-8 on the letterhead (crossed out) of the Hôtel d'Angleterre in Copenhagen.
To the architect of the retirement home for actors in Couilly-Pont-aux-Dames, founded by Coquelin, for which Waldeck-Rousseau, President of the Council, had just laid the foundation stone on July 16, 1903.
There was talk of building a small theater, which Binet was to design with Mariano Fortuny, who "must be very knowledgeable about everything to do with the stage". Coquelin is concerned about the number of seats, and envisages "an uncurved room - it will be much cheaper", and draws a sketch. He wants to draw inspiration from Bayreuth and the Christiania theater, which is "well done. If it weren't exposed to fire, it would look almost perfect. He insists on windows and ventilation... "Think carefully about the artists' dressing rooms, let's not treat them like cattle"... [In fact, it's an open-air theater that will be built].
Enclosed is the program for the inauguration of the "Théâtre du Parc de Pont-aux-Dames", August 19, 1906 (1 p. in-4, small tear).
