Jacques COPEAU. 4 L.A.S., Paris and Pernand-Vergelesses 1934-1935, to Madeleine Lambert; 1page in-8 and 4pages in-4 (2 with vignette), 2 envelopes.
Beautiful correspondence to actress Madeleine Lambert (1892-1977), who played Rosalinde in Shakespeare's Rosalinde ou Comme il vous plaira (premiered at the Atelier on October 11, 1934). The play's success encourages Copeau to create a large-scale repertory theater at l'Ambigu or la Porte Saint-Martin; the project never comes to fruition.
July 27, 1934, thanking Copeau for a shipment of sweets. "Soon we'll be locked up in Shakespeare, far from everything". - January 3, 1935, he hopes she feels the well-being of rest. "I envy you, not having known relaxation for months!"...- April 19. He hasn't signed yet. "And there's a draw! But the two places are not comparable!"...- August 17. The project is going nowhere, he can't complete the subscription, and he's going to ask all his friends and acquaintances to buy shares of a thousand francs. But he refuses to allow Madeleine Lambert to sell her jewels: "I have never accepted, and will never accept, that an actress or an actor should sponsor a theater that I run, and thereby create rights for herself. I want to be absolutely free. [...] All my life I've fought against the tyranny of money. I am radically poor. And personally I want to stay that way"... And he will be happy to have Madeleine play...
