Jean COCTEAU. L.A.S., Roquebrune September 1929, [to Émile Fabre, administrator of the Comédie-Française]; 1 page in-4. About the set for La Voix humaine (first performed at the Comédie-Française on February 17, 1930 by Berthe Bovy, with a set by Christian Bérard). "Indeed the black turn would be sinister - I was proposing a negro's head - or white. Perhaps the best, strangest and most logical at the same time would be the same red as the red and gold curtain. In short, this set is a costume, a vehicle in which Mlle Bovy must move. I'd like her and Bérard (to whom I give carte blanche) to work it out together. There's no need to consult me, Bérard knows my every reflex, and I bow to his masterly taste. He needs to consult Bovy about visibility. Unless he (Bérard) wants to be named - which I doubt. I'd like an anonymous décor (Décor de X)"... [This was Christian Bérard's first set.]
