Jean COCTEAU. 2 L.A.S. "Jean", 1925-1929, to Valentine Hugo; 1 page in-4, and 1 page in-12 on the back of a color postcard (Roquebrune), stamped autograph envelopes.
[Villefranche-sur-Mer, September 29, 1925]. "Here sunshine but sunshine so treacherous that I can't get over a cold. Mysterious coolness wraps itself around your neck in the middle of a fire. [...] we must meet again in Orphée's work. I'm very worried about [Marcel] Herrand. 1° he's in Canada - 2° he's depriving me of Madame Pitoeff. 3° what can he use to stage my play? 3° If he agrees to play at the Pitoeffs', and he plays the part of Heurtebise, the part I wrote for the film actor Haziza - who would be prodigious in it. Darn. You see the problems. Tomorrow evening I'm reading my play to Igor S. [Stravinsky]. He's kind enough to help me with the musical side, which I'm organizing myself... by cheating!
Roquebrune [August 23, 1929], a few days after Diaghilev's death in Venice (August 19). "Of course the whole Russian company and Diaghilew were eaten up inside as if by termites and this death is an "image" - but it stirs up so many memories! and it was to a Russian rehearsal that we linked - you were wearing a beautiful green dress. I'm thinking of you Valentine darling"...
Attached is a telegram, Villefranche-sur-Mer September 26, 1925, to Valentine Hugo: "Want to tell you before any other good news. Have finished Orphée".
