Paul CLAUDEL. 2 L.A.S., 1947-1948, to Jacques Hébertot: 3 pages and a half in-4 at his address 11, Boulevard Lannes, XVIe. About the revival of L'Annonce faite à Marie at the Théâtre Hébertot (March 12, 1948). December 7, 1947. Dispute with Hébertot over choice of actors: "You have more confidence in your judgment, based on a simple audition of a few minutes, than in mine, based on several hours of intense, close work. My status as author of the play constitutes for you a negligible element of appreciation". He is therefore forced "to accept the interpreters you impose on me. I will therefore put all the physical and intellectual strength at my disposal [...] as well as my 40 years of experience, at the service of the interpretation you have given me"... February 28 1948, at the end of rehearsals for L'Annonce faite à Marie: "Strange destiny, that of this play, born in 1892, and which, after fifty-six years, was still yearning, still sighing, to find its definitive form. Thanks to you, thanks to the invaluable elements you have placed in my hands, I have reason to hope that it has, this time, reached it, and I can exclaim, not only with Mara, but with Violaine, that my child lives"... He thanks the "necessary voices and living souls" of the performers, Ève Francis, Jean Hervé, and "that living cathedral, Alain Cuny". He also evokes the "admirable music" composed by Maria Scibor... "For weeks and months on end, we all worked together, or rather it was the drama, the mystery itself, a single soul with diverse timbres, working towards its own expression"...
