Paul CLAUDEL. Autograph manuscript, L'Annonce faite à Marie chez Louis Jouvet (June 1946), Paris May 18, 1946; 1 1/2 pages in-4. Open letter to Louis Jouvet published in Le Figaro on June 4, 1946 and reproduced in the program of the Théâtre de l'Athénée on the occasion of the revival of L'Annonce faite à Marie directed by Louis Jouvet, after a tour of the play in South America. "With what curiosity will I go to watch and listen, with this new face, with this new accent, that you have given it, this Announcement that you bring us today from the depths of the Sunset!"... Claudel recalls some of the circumstances surrounding the premiere of the work on December 24, 1912, at the Théâtre de l'Œuvre in the Salle Malakoff, where Jouvet played the role of the Apprentice. He concludes by evoking "the merciless hand-to-hand combat of the two sisters: the ruthless faith, the ruthless necessity of Mara, and underneath the irresistible demand, the right over God, the victory over God, the power over God that awakens in the depths of a devoured being!" Attached is the program of the Athénée-Théâtre Louis Jouvet, May-June 1946, of the "Représentations exceptionnelles données à l'occasion de la Conférence de Paris" in which this Letter to Louis Jouvet is published.
