Sarah BERNHARDT. Printed menu with autograph dedication, 1911; in-8.
Menu for the dinner given in honor of Sarah Bernhardt on June 21, 1911 at the Hotel Marie-Antoinette in New York, at the end of the extensive tour of nearly nine months that she had just undertaken in the U.S.A. and Canada.
The menu comes from Hélène Petit (niece of Hélène Petit, creator of the role of Gervaise in L'Assommoir), an actress who was twenty at the time of the tour, and who had taken part in it with her mother, Blanche Boullenger, in S. Bernhardt's troupe. It is dedicated in pencil: "à Hélène de qui j'espère beaucoup et que j'embrasse tendrement Sarah Bernhardt 1911". Other dedications by actors Max Maxudian, Lou Tellegen, Suzanne Seylor, and Doctor F. Marot (Sarah's private physician, who followed her everywhere)... A photograph of Hélène Petit as a child is attached.
Attached is the menu for Sarah Bernhardt Day, December 9, 1896, illustrated by Louise Abbema.
