"Among the memories we retain of a being we loved and to whom we were attached, some have the form of an image, two-dimensional; others appear like unusual streamers unfurling in a dreamy night; others become as immaterial as an entity; but some, on the other hand, stand beside us, breathing like a Presence"... Of Jouvet, Barrault praises "his professional power, his scrupulous conscience and his engineer's science". He describes "his mask penetrated by intelligence, his cut made of elegance and seduction, his mouth whose lower lip was at once greedy and pouty"... And at the end, he evokes the memory of Charles Dullin's funeral, where Jouvet had confided to him that in two years it would be his turn... "Jouvet was certainly the elite of the theater, but he was also the actor of the People of Paris!"
