"The sitter is Angus Cook, one of the artist's principal models in the mid- to late 1980s. Here he holds a pose similar to that in the painting Naked Man on a Bed. [...] When the etching was proofed in June 1987, ten impressions were pulled. Subsequently, Freud decided to continue working on the plate. He filled in the area round the figure with a studio setting, adding shading to the shoulder, upper arm and knees and details in the outer and inner thigh. According to Marc Balakjian, he was dissatisfied with the drawing and decided not to publish it. Instead, he issued the ten proofs from the earlier state as an edition." (Toby Treves, Lucian Freud: Catalogue Raisonné of the Prints, London, Modern Art Press, 2022, n°41).
