JEAN MARAIS (1913-1998)
Made famous by his brilliant career as an actor, and by the artistic and personal bond between him and Jean Cocteau, Jean Marais discovered ceramics in the 1950s, during the couple's stay in Vallauris. After Cocteau's death, supported by the community of Vallauris potters, he trained in ceramic art, then opened a gallery and settled permanently in Vallauris in 1980. His dreamlike world of mythological, fantastical and zoomorphic figures, inspired by ancient traditions and theater, emerges in his sculptural work with refinement and poetry.
