MADO JOLAIN (1919-2021)
Trained at the Arts Décoratifs and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Mado Jolain opened her workshop in 1948 with her husband, the painter René Legrand. Her early utilitarian creations, influenced by Georges Jouve, soon evolved towards a dual aesthetic: functional pieces with thick enamels and dark colors, and decorative works blending figuration and abstraction, with broad flat tints of color on a white enamel background. Her research gradually focused on form rather than decoration, exploring the effects of superimposition. In the 1960s, she turned to outdoor ceramics, retiring in 1965 after a final series of monumental pieces.
