JULIETTE DEREL (1918-2007)
Juliette Derel, who trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tours, began her career as a ceramist in Vallauris, working at the Atelier du Grand Chêne, the Atelier du Tapis Vert and preparing summer exhibitions at Nérolium. In 1952, she opened her own studio, where she worked alongside her husband Jean Rivier until they separated in 1957. Their joint production consisted of utilitarian forms, with generally abstract and geometric decorations, characteristic of Rivier's graphic ornamentation. Derel's output expanded over the years to include other pieces, notably boldly colored mirrors, furniture and sculptures, often monochrome creations with scraped or scarified surfaces.
