Dimitri Semenovich STELLETSKY (1875-1947)
Folder containing 7 sheets of drawings by Stelletsky for Le Prince Igor. The folder is titled in Indian ink by Stelletsky: "STELLCTSKI / 8 LEAVES / FOR / THE SONG OF / PRINCE IGOR". A pencil annotation (probably by Denis Roche) reads "Specimen of the 40 sheets of the complete series".
This series is already announced in a letter from Stelletsky to Denis Roche dated October 23, 1937, and in a letter dated December 4, 1937, he writes: "I have just finished the 7 sample images and a page of text (Russian 13th-century style) for the 'Song of Prince Igor', which I plan to send you in the next few days".
Already on April 11, he wrote: "These experiments have persuaded me that the edition should be much more modest, i.e. the format of the book would be 20 c x 17 c, binding and the 10 illustrations (as a maximum in two colors...)".
The text page is not preserved in this folder.
