Dimitri Semenovich STELLETSKY (1875-1947) Correspondence between D. Stelletsky and Denis Roche: 28 handwritten letters from D. Stelletsky to D. Roche between March 18, 1933 and October 23, 1945 (4 in 1933, 2 in 1935, 8 in 1937, 6 in 1939 and 8 in 1945) and 19 drafts of letters from D. Roche to D. Stelletsky. The main subject of these letters is the edition of "Prince Igor" in D. Roche's translation, with illustrations by D. Stelletsky. A letter from Stelletsky dated March 18, 1933, consisting of three en suite photographs, one of the iconostasis in the Vitiaz chapel and two of Stelletsky in Napoule (Le Toit). In this letter, he responds to Roche's proposal of March 11 (draft enclosed) to publish "Prince Igor" in collaboration, and announces the dispatch of 7 photographs of his illustrations. Six of these black-and-white photographs are present in this folder: all annotated and signed on the back with the words "Прошу верните" (I ask you to return it). Four dated January 30, 1932, one dated October 1, 1929 and one undated, five with the stamp of the photographer Paul Becker in Ixelles and one with no indication of photographer. In a letter dated December 4, 1937, he announces the forthcoming dispatch of the 7 sample images and a page of text (Russian 13th-century style) for the "Chant du Prince Igor" he has just completed. On December 28, 1937, he sends a photograph of his studio with the annotation "Le Toit" in the upper left-hand corner of the photograph itself. On July 21, 1939, Roche mentioned the return of the eight drawings on a receipt dated July 12, 1939 from R. Wittman of Éditions d'art et d'histoire for these drawings. The correspondence may be incomplete, but it allows us to retrace the path of Stelletsky's drawings. In his letter of April 11, 1933, he gives a brief history of his illustrations on this work: "My first illustrations (in 1910) which are now in the museum of Третьяковская галлерея (Galerie Trétiakov) in Moscow. In France during the war, I made variants of the illustrations..." Provenance: Archives of Denis Roche. [Russian art]
