LOUIS XVI. Proclamation du roi, sur le décret de l'Assemblée nationale, concernant le droit de faire la paix & la guerre, du 27 mai 1790.
Grenoble: J.M. Cuchet, 1790.
1 leaf in-4 (20 x 25 cm), decorated with an engraved headband.
Slight fold marks to edges.

Fine Grenoble printing of this important proclamation by which Louis XVI officially accepts and promulgates the decree of the National Assembly of May 22, 1790. With this decree, the Assembly adopted the principle that the king could no longer decide alone on war and peace. Although the king retains the initiative (he proposes), the Assembly must give its prior consent. This promulgation thus enshrines the principle that the nation's right to life and death (war) belongs to the sovereign people.

A very fine copy of this document, which sealed a decisive step towards constitutional monarchy and political modernity.
