Blanche de LANDERSET (1862 - 1934)
Portrait of Mary Martha Purnell (1805-1881/1891)
Gouache watercolor
Signed lower left
21 x 17 cm
On the back, a handwritten label, partially faded. It reads "Mrs Bourne in 1st marriage, Madame Charles Thorndike, née Purnell. Grandmother of the Comtesse de Sartiges".

Provenance: Château du Perthuis.

Note: After Blanche de Triqueti's death in 1886, Edward Lee Childe remarried Marie Elisabeth de Sartiges, daughter of Count and Ambassador Eugène de Sartiges. The Childe family lived a social life, frequenting the European aristocracy, but curiously remained attached to Château du Perthuis and to the memory of the Triqueti family. They kept the estate as Blanche had laid it out in 1883, and after Marie's death in 1944, the château remained the property of the family, who cultivated its memory.
