Henry de TRIQUETI (1803-1874) Project for a candelabra, probably for the Duc de Montpensier Pen and brown ink over black pencil lines on tracing paper 43.2 x 20.3 cm Several separate strips of tracing paper, affixed to modify the subject Small folds The female figure carrying the grapes on the left of the candelabra can be compared to the sculpture "La porteuse de raisins" dated 1847 (see: exhibition catalog, Henry de Triqueti, le sculpteur des princes, opus cit. supra fig. 16 p.28 and note 76). This sculpture is thought to be part of the candelabra for the Duc de Montpensier commissioned in 1847. Our sheet is therefore probably the working drawing for the candelabra commissioned by the Duc de Montpensier from Triqueti in 1847. Note the various butterfly marks and the two attempts at feet, typical of early preparatory sketches. Provenance: Château du Perthuis. Note: A true polymorph artist, Triqueti was as interested in architecture as he was in the decorative arts, exhibiting numerous objects in bronze or modeled wax at the 1831 and 1832 Salons. His approach was similar to that of a Renaissance sculptor, with strict control over the use of his models and the choice of bronze and ivory craftsmen. Although he began with a historical and picturesque repertoire, after 1834 - when he was commissioned to create the doors of the Madeleine church - he turned to subjects inspired by the Bible or Antiquity. Triqueti was also commissioned to work in churches, creating pulpits and religious silverware, including for the royal family.
