The presence in Triqueti's collection of this cast, taken from a marble relief by the artist Desiderio da Settignano (1428-1464), confirms the sculptor's sustained interest in the art of the Italian Quattrocento throughout his career. It also shows that the artist had built up a network of friendly relationships with private collectors who were very active in France. This network gave him access to works of the highest quality, which were still little known. Before joining the collection of Nelly and Édouard André in 1914, this relief depicting a young hero in profile belonged to the wealthy industrialist Florentin-Achille Seillière (1813-1873). This erudite art lover amassed an impressive collection of paintings, enamels, objets d'art and precious books at Château de Mello (Oise). The catalog of his 1890 after-death sale, which included the Jeune guerrier de profil then attributed to Donatello, features a large number of Renaissance works, notably by the Florentine workshop of the Della Robbias that Triqueti admired.

Provenance: Château du Perthuis.

Note: Henry de Triqueti is reputed to have been a discerning collector. The catalog of his sale on May 4, 1886 (lot 75) is edifying, with works by Botticelli and Fra Angelico. He is also known to have advised the d'Orléans family on the constitution of their collections.
