Double frontispiece from a Koran, Timurid Iran or Turkey, 15th century Frontispiece on two pages richly illuminated in gold and polychrome, text in Arabic calligraphed in naskhi in black ink in reserves on a gold background, flanked by two friezes of gilded palmettes on a midnight-blue background and surmounted at the top and bottom by unwâns formed by gilded cartouches with a double appendix of flowers on a blue background decorated with arabesques. The whole is encircled by a midnight-blue band painted with interlacing palmette scrolls punctuated by fleurons and medallions with red hearts.
