Odilon Redon (1840-1916) Captive Pegasus. 1889. Lithograph. 295x338mm. Mellerio 102. Proof on chine appliqué, lithographed above the subject at right "Pégase captif 100 exemp.", dedicated "to Monsieur Hillel" and signed in pencil below the subject lower left, damaged and restored: the chine slightly detached; small oblique scuff in the subject on the right, extending into the margin; another short oblique scuff at the head on the square line; 45mm tears in the left margin; small tears at the lower right edge of the chine, summarily restored; large moisture halos in the lower margin, with misses and tears; traces of glue around the perimeter on the verso. Reduced margins [436x500mm]. Very rare. Edition announced as 100 proofs (but not produced in full). "In the catalog of his works contained in the "livre de raison", Redon indicates that the print run by Becquet of Le Pégase captif was not completed. Of the hundred copies announced, only twenty-five were actually printed in the first state and fifty in the second and final state [...] Executed in 1889, the lithograph was reworked two years later by the artist to produce a second state, the proofs of which were distributed through Redon's usual intermediaries, Durand-Ruel and Laurent Dumont in Paris, and Edmond Deman in Brussels. Sold for 10 francs in 1891, this isolated piece is one of Redon's most frequently exhibited prints, highly appreciated by critics, collectors and artists alike, including the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle [who drew a copy]. [...] A symbol of liberated creativity and poetic inspiration, the winged horse figures prominently in Redon's iconographic repertoire." (Valérie Sueur-Hermel, in R. Rapetti, dir. Odilon Redon Prince du Rêve, exhibition catalog, Paris, RMN, 2011, p.220).
