Jean Siméon Chardin (1699-1779) (after)
Le Négligé, ou Toilette du matin. 1741. Engraved by J. Ph. Le Bas. Sight: 265x375mm. Bocher 38. Very fine proof on laid paper. Minor light foxing. Small epidermure in the lower right letter. Frame (not examined outside the frame).

The original painting was exhibited at the Louvre in 1741, under the title Un tableau représentant le négligé, ou toilette du matin, belonging to M. le Cte de Tessin. It is now in the National Museum in Stockholm.
"Nothing is simpler or more happily captured than the action of an attentive mother attaching a pin to her daughter's hair. Something even more piquant is the movement of a child's heart, which the skilful painter has found the art of expressing through a glance that the little girl throws into a mirror, as if in stealth, to satisfy her little vanity and see for herself if the care of her dear mother has embellished her." (Mercure de France, October 1741).
