After stopovers in Tenerife, Rio, Cape Town, Bourbon and Pondicherry, he arrived in Calcutta in May 1829. Here, he methodically prepared his exploration of the northern peninsula. He planned to explore as far south as Cape Comorin, but died prematurely in Bombay on December 7, 1832, exhausted by fatigue and the climate. The edition includes two atlases, with 4 maps and 279 plates out of the 290 required. Plates 60 to 64 and 66 are missing from the first atlas, and botanical plates 105 to 109 from the second. The first atlas has several black lithographs featuring views and portraits of inhabitants of the Indies. The 27 color zoology plates that open the second atlas are complete. The botanical plates are the most numerous, with 175 black engravings out of 180. Spines rubbed, snags to headpieces. Freckles, sometimes heavy, wetness. First endpaper of first volume unbound. False title and title of first three volumes of text missing. Also missing are pages 161 to 192 in the third volume, and pages 57 to 72 in the fourth volume, part "Description des collections. Botany". First two leaves of first volume and last leaf of second volume rebacked. Repairs to the first two leaves of the second atlas. Restoration to plate 39 in the first atlas.
