HOGARD (Henri). A look at the erratic terrain of the Vosges. 1848. Strasbourg: E. Simon ; Épinal : Valentin, 1851. - Atlas in-folio, 460 x 304 : (2 ff.), 32 plates. Half marbled basane, smooth spine decorated, speckled edges (Abbaye Saint Louis du Temple). First edition of this atlas, published by Daniel Dollfus-Ausset (1797-1870), Alsatian industrialist and pioneer of glaciology. It was specially designed to accompany and illustrate geologist Henri Hogard's (1808-1880) study of erratic terrain in the Vosges - boulders and rocks transported and deposited by glaciers, often far from their original bedrock. It consists of thirty-two lithographed plates, most of them printed in color, featuring dozens of geological sections and detailed plans, as well as representations of glacial pebbles and panoramic views. The latter include emblematic landscapes such as the Moselle valley, seen upstream and downstream of Épinal, the deep moraine of the Aar glaciers, the Longuet moraine seen from upstream, and the Rein-Brice moraines near Le Tholy. The book also includes perspectives from Lac de Blanchemer and a remarkable sketch entitled "Glacier de la Moselle pendant la période de décroissement, à l'époque de la formation des moraines frontales de Longuet", providing valuable insights into past glacial dynamics. A good copy in a modern binding produced at the Saint Louis du Temple abbey in Essonne. Repairs to verso of title and verso of plate 28.
