The initial objective: to find La Lilloise, a ship that disappeared in 1833 north of Greenland. Although the search was unsuccessful, the expedition led to groundbreaking studies of Iceland and Greenland, covering medicine, biology, botany, history and literature. Gaimard, surrounded by experts such as Xavier Marmier (man of letters), Victor Lottin (geographer) and Eugène Robert (geologist), returned for four consecutive summers. Their work resulted in a complete work, Voyage en Islande et au Groënland, enriched by three atlases (zoology, mineralogy, landscapes) with detailed and often colorful plates illustrating fauna, icy landscapes and local life.
