- 6 text volumes (of 10) in-4, 291 x 228, 3 atlases in-folio, 488 x 352 and 1 atlas in-plano, 580 x 420. Later gray half cloth with corners, smooth spine, speckled edges for the text volumes and 2 atlases, and green half calf, smooth spine for the navigation and hydrography atlas. First edition of the circumnavigation report by Captain Louis de Freycinet (1779-1842). The voyage, rich in scientific observations (magnetism, botany, ethnography), took the crew from Cape Town to Hawaii, via New Guinea and Sydney. But on February 14, 1820, the Uranie ran aground in the Falkland Islands due to inaccurate charts. Freycinet saved part of the work and, after a two-month wait, bought an American ship, renamed the Physicienne, to return to France. Despite 7 deaths and 38 desertions, the expedition was a scientific success. On his return, Freycinet published his work and became a member of the Académie des Sciences (1825). Rose's diary, published later (1927), offers a complementary and human perspective on this adventure. Published from 1824 to 1844, this account was written by Freycinet and the scientists Jean-René Constant Quoy (1790-1869, surgeon), Joseph Paul Gaimard (1793-1858, physician, naturalist and surgeon of the French Navy under sail) and Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupré (1789-1854, pharmacist and traveler).
