[COLLECTIVE]. Études sur le terrain houiller de Commentry. Saint-Étienne : imprimerie Théolier et Cie, [1886-1893]. -3 atlases in 5 folio volumes, gray half cloth (modern binding). This set of individual atlases illustrates the collective studies devoted to the Commentry coalfield (Allier), published between 1886 and 1893. These works, rich in graphic and scientific documents, accompany fundamental research on the geology, flora and fossil fauna of this region, published in the Bulletin de la Société de l'industrie minérale.

The first atlas, linked to the study by Henri Fayol (1841-1925, director of the Commentry coal mines), Louis de Launay (1860-1938) and Stanislas Meunier (1843-1925), illustrates their text on lithology and stratigraphy, published in 1886. It comprises 30 plates, mainly on glued China paper, representing several dozen geological sections, maps of the coalfield and rock samples.
The copy retains the front cover.

The second atlas, in two volumes, accompanies the work of René Zeiller (1847-1915) and Bernard Renault (1836-1904) on fossil flora, published in 1888 and 1889. Its 75 plates, lithographed by L. Sohier and printed on China paper pasted on vellum, reproduce hundreds of plant fossils with great precision.
This copy includes all the explanatory leaflets associated with the plates.

Finally, the third atlas, also in two volumes, illustrates the fossil fauna studies carried out by Charles Brongniart (1859-1899) and Louis Auguste Édouard Sauvage (1850-1937). The first volume, published in 1888, features 16 plates dedicated to fossil fish, with 3 heliogravures by Dujardin and 13 black lithographs by L. Sohier, H. Formant and Sauvage.
The second volume, published in 1893, includes 37 plates accompanying the study Recherches pour servir à l'histoire des insectes fossiles des temps primaires. A separate edition of this text, including the same atlas, was also published the same year. Among the most remarkable pieces is Plate 43, a life-size rendering of Meganeura monyi, the largest dragonfly fossil ever discovered.

Good copies in modest library bindings. Some soiling in the first atlas.
