14K (585) gold ring set with an agate cameo carved with a portrait of Napoleon. First half of the 19th century. Finger size: 54. Cameo size: approx. 2.7 x 2 cm. Gross weight: 12.6 g (crack, slight lack) Napoleon revived the art of cameo and intaglio, and glyptics flourished, mainly in Rome. These tiny portraits depicted him in turn as young consul, victorious general and finally emperor. They were given to family members, friends and, more broadly, to collaborators and supporters. Josephine, of course, was encouraged to wear cameos depicting her. Diana Scarisbrick, Bijoux à portrait -camées, intailles et miniatures des Médicis aux Romanov-, 2011, p.226-227
